NEW rules which come in to force early next year will make it necessary for all vehicles to be insured unless they are declared as ‘off-the-road’.

From early 2011, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will be working together to reduce the number of uninsured drivers in the UK.

Effectively, this means that if you have a vehicle you do not use – and therefore do not have insurance for, you will have to declare it as off-the-road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).

The keeper of any vehicle in the DVLA’s databases which has neither insurance nor SORN will first be sent a letter notifying them of the new rules. If the keeper of the vehicle takes no action then they face a fixed penalty fine of £100, court prosecution and fines up to £1000 or even having the vehicle clamped, seized or destroyed.

What vehicle keepers need to do:
