Executives of a Welsh television station S4C (Channel 4 Wales) came under intense criticism from its TV audience when it leased a Land Rover Discovery for £1,000 a month. It was meant to be used by the host of its Cefn Gwlad farming program.

S4C presenter Dai Jones will use the leased SUV for visiting remote villages and farm locations for his Cefn Gwlad program. Jones is also the host for two other S4C programs, Rasus and Fferm Factor. An ITV Wales spokesman defends the lease saying that “We ensure that the most cost effective and economical ways are followed when purchasing goods and services. Funding Cuts
The TV station is funded directly from the Department for Culture Media and Sport in London. Since being established in 1982, the S4C has been the recipient of generous DCMS grants that increasingly get adjusted with inflation.

It was after the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition coming into power last month that concern over its government funding suddenly became a reality. Under Jeremy Hunt as the new Culture Secretary, the S4C already suffered a “voluntary” budget slash of £2m for the current fiscal year. This has brought speculation that its days of generous funding are over.

Wrong Timing
It’s in this context of a tight-fisted financial situation that the £1,000 a month lease for a Discovery is seen as out of place. A TV station production insider, when contacted by the Western Mail, stated that “It is a waste of money to have leased a vehicle at £1,000 a month. It’s true Dai travels all over Wales to visit remote farms, but that doesn’t justify leasing a Land Rover Discovery. Any car will take you to a farm. If it’s a rocky terrain, you can use farmer’s tractor.”

“S4C is pleading poverty and telling production companies they will have to tighten belts. What sort of message does this send out? They should use the money they get more wisely.”

The insider further stated to the Western Mail: “S4C must be careful not to give the impression that it uses public funds unwisely”.

Jones, 66, has yet to air his side on the row. He was already a TV celebrity who had hosted family quiz show Siôn a Siân before taking over the Cefn Gwlad when it started airing in 1982.

The bases are using the concept of LRX with 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine and electric motor. Fuel consumption is claimed to be 21 km per liter and 130 grams of waste gas carbon dioxide per kilometer. Manufacturers plan to market these products throughout the world and hope to expand the market. They will conduct the first launching in the summer of next year.
