There was a time when compact cars did not receive a lot of attention – they were supposed to be basic because they were only targeted at College students and first car buyers. Those days are gone however, and thanks to the fuel prices and economic downturn, compact cars have become the next big thing.
The MAZDA3 is a shining example of how compact cars have taken this opportunity and run with it, incorporating great performance, super-stylish exterior and interior design, and plenty of features which make this an affordable yet class-leading choice.
The MAZDA3 comes as a four-door sedan and hatchback, and sports an upgraded engine. The 2.3-liter four-cylinder that produces 156hp and 150lb-ft of torque may not sound like much more power, but the driving experience is vastly superior. This model is zippy, nimble and fun to drive, with firm suspension that makes throwing it around twisty roads a joy.
Even body lean around corners is minimal while steering is clear and responsive and the result is a little car that drives with all the pizzazz of a big one. Unfortunately fuel economy suffers somewhat, with 22/28mpg city/highway.
On the inside the MAZDA3 is equally good, wearing mostly black for a cool sporting look. Although at this price you don’t get a particularly high quality interior, Mazda has achieved a refined look with budget materials and for that they deserve plenty of credit.
There are more trim levels than you can poke a stick at for the 2009 MAZDA3, including the iSport, iTouring Value, plus the Sport, Touring and Grand Touring in the s model. Then the MazdaSpeed comes in base and Grand Touring trims.
